Dir. Martyn Burke

A film that chronicles the development of the personal computer through the founding of Microsoft and Apple.

MY TAKE

Pirates of Silicon Valley is probably the reason people were so initially skeptical about The Social Network. The Microsoft and Apple rivalry has infinitely more potential to encapsulate the revolution of a generation and explore themes of betrayal, on top of art vs. commerce and others, but the subject feels like it’s treated by museum curators instead of artists. Unnecessary direct-to-camera monologues hammer the significance of moments over our head in the dramatic equivalent of reading 1s and 0s. The lives of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are bound to be given more justice in future biographies, but until then this film is like glimpsing at potential waiting to be handled by a visionary.

  1. For me it was the other way around. I watched The Social Network 3 times, then thought that there should be another film like that (obviously, since everyone now is just ripping off old ideas), and found Pirates of the Silicon Valley.

I haven’t watched it yet, just about to do this now, but am kind of sceptical after you giving it 2.5 out of 5. I really REALLY hate wasting time on bad films, but hoping to find some inspiration in this one.

  2. Hi Tay! Let me clarify – Pirates of Silicon Valley is nowhere near as good as The Social Network. But the story of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs has so much more meat than Mark Zuckerberg’s, it’s a shame someone like David Fincher didn’t get to handle this story.

However, you’ll see seeds of inspiration in this film, even if they make Gates a villain (which I assume will never happen now that he’s known as much for being a philanthropist)…
